INSTITUTE OF FRENCH CULTURAL STUDIES
Founded in 1993 by Professor Lawrence D. Kritzman (Dartmouth College) and the late Edouard Morot-Sir, the Institute of French Cultural Studies has now had thirteen Summer Institutes, all directed by Professor Kritzman. Nelly Furman (Cornell University, emerita, and current Director, Association of Departments of Foreign Languages) was Associate Director for five Summer Institutes, and Brian J. Reilly (Fordham University) has been Associate Director of the Institute since 2012. These Summer Institutes have become well established in the academic landscape, and they are made possible in part through the support of the French Cultural Services and of Dartmouth College, through grants from businesses, and also by graduate programs throughout the United States that send participants to the Institute.

The major goal of the Institute of French Cultural Studies is to allow advanced graduate students and assistant professors in French to partake in contemporary cultural debates on both sides of the Atlantic and to prepare them to supplement the programmatic needs of French departments in developing courses in interdisciplinary studies taught in French.

What Our Participants Have Said about the IFCS

"The Institute's insistence on passionate teaching, creative research projects, and collaboration will undoubtedly stay with many of us …. The solidarity formed at the Institute behind passionate teaching is certainly necessary now more than if we are to defend the value of the Humanities."
